Abstract
SincethefoundingofUSFIRSTin1989,therehasbeenaconsistentimpetustofindnewareasof
growthtoexpandFIRST'smessageofinspirationandrecognitionofscienceandtechnologyintheK‐12 educationalmarket.Tosupplementtheirotherprograms,FIRSThopestousethe5thGearsimulator, designedandprogrammedbysoftwareengineersatLockheedMartin,toexpandtheirmessageand impacttoanystudentwithaccesstoacomputer.ThescopeoftheFIRSTVirtualChallengeprojectisto makerecommendationsonthebestmethods,competitionmodels,andnecessaryimprovementsinthe 5thGearsimulatortoallowthecreationoftheFIRSTVirtualChallenge.Theserecommendationsare madebaseduponextensivebackgroundresearchandthoroughdatafromtestsrunatselectFIRSTand FIRST‐relatedevents.Thefinalrecommendationsforthisprojectdiscussuseofthe5thGearsimulatorin anauxiliarycompetitiononThursdayatFRCRegionalandChampionshipEvent,useofthesimulator internallyatFIRSTforgamedesignandanimationuses,useforrecruiting,marketing,andoutreachby teams,usefordrivertrainingbyteams,anduseforstrategyplanningbyteams.
