    Shortened Spring
    FrankBeamerandtheTech coachingstaff,inconjunction withDirectorofAthleticsJim Weaver,madethedecision tocancelthefinalweekof springpracticefollowingthe on-campuseventsofApril16, thusshorteningtheoff-season schedulebyfourpractices. Althoughitcouldhavebeen beneficialfromafootball standpointtoseehowsome oftheinexperiencedplayers respondedtoafullcrowdatthe springgame,allpartiesinvolved feltitwastherightdecisionto make. "Iampleasedwiththe progressoftheteamasawhole," headcoachFrankBeamersaid. "Wecould'veusedthoselastfour practices,butIthinkwegot better,andthepracticeswedid havewereverygood.Ihopethe guysworkalittlebitharderin thesummer,becauseweneedto beingreatshapecomeAugust sowecangetrightbacktowork andmakeupforthetimewelost duringthespring." Beamersaidthegroupmost affectedbytheabsenceofthe springgamewasprobablythe specialteamsunit,asthatiswhat hetypicallyusesasthefinaltest forhiskickersandpunters.     A Revamped Offensive Line
    Anothergroupthatwould havebenefitedfromthespring gamewastheoffensiveline, whichhasundergoneanalmost completemakeoversincethebowl game.However,unlikelastseason whentheHokieshadtoreplace threefull-timestartersupfront, the2007bunchfeaturesthree returningstarters—albeitwith twoinnewpositions—andtwo otherswhosawplentyofgame action. "We'rebetterupfront, butthequestionishowmuch better,"offensivecoordinator
    BryanStinespringsaid."Ithink someofthemoveswemadewill benefitus,andalotofguyshad goodsprings,butweneedthem tocontinuethatinthefallso wecaneasesomeofourdepth concerns." Thelonereturneeathis positionwillbefreshmanAllAmericaselectionSergioRender, whoimprovedconstantlyinhis roleastherightguard.Duane Brownwillmovefromrighttackle tolefttackletoprotectSean Glennon'sblindside,andRyan Shumanwillassumethecenter dutiesafterservingatleftguard ayearago.Thecoachesare confidentwithallthreeofthose players,butthequestionsarise withthetwospotsleftvacantby themovesofBrownandShuman. Theidealcandidateatleft guardisNickMarshman,who essentiallybackeduptheentire linelastseasonandgotofftoa goodstartinthespring.Arguably themostpublicizedmoveofthe off-season,though,wasformer tightendandnewlybulked-up EdWang'semergenceastheright tackle.Hehadbegunworking theretowardthetailendof2006,
    Inaddition tothemoves alongthe offensiveline, apairof defensive playerswere shuffledaroundwho couldeasilygetregular playingtimeattheirnew spots. SophomoreKam Chancellorwasmoved fromcornerbacktorover priortospringpractice, andthecoachesare excitedabouthis potentialnotonly tocontribute,butto start. "Itwasagreat moveforVirginia Tech,andforhim," strongsafetiesand outsidelinebackers coachJimCavanaugh said."Hehasthe makingsofbecoming aphenomenal footballplayer." Meanwhile,redshirt sophomoreCamMartinmakes theswitchfromfreesafetyto whiplinebacker,wherehispass coverageabilitycombineswithhis intelligencetogivehimagreat shotatmakinganimpactthis season. "Cammaybeoneofthe smartestfootballplayersthatI've evercoached,"Cavanaughsaid. Fifth-yearseniorCoreyGordon currentlyownstheNo.1spot vacatedbyBrendenHill,but Martinshouldseeactionearlyin theseason. LeadingthepackwillbeTech's toptwotacklersfromayearago, All-ACClinebackersVinceHalland XavierAdibi.Fosterthinksthey mightbethebesttandemTech haseverseen,butheexpectseven moreoutofthemthisseason. "VinceandXavierhaveboth workedreallyhardtobecome completelinebackers,butI've challengedbothofthemnotonly tobecomeleadersofthedefense, butleadersofthefootballteam."

    Althougheightreturning startersoneachsideoftheball meansthatVirginiaTechwill beingoodhandsthisseason, italsomeansthattherewillbe sometalenttoreplacewhen21 seniorsdepartatyear'send.That iswhytheTechcoachingstaff workedhardtocompileoneofits finestrecruitingclassesinrecent memory. "NotonlydoIthinkthatthis isaverytalentedincomingclass, Ithinkit'spotentiallyoneofthe bestclasseswe'veeversigned," Beamersaid. Noneoftheincoming freshmenwillberushedalong, however,asentimentexpressedby manyoftheassistantcoaches.
