    A Study on Elementary Schools Middle Grade Children's Interpreting Ways of Cartoon Contents and Violence
    Abstract
    The aim of the study is to explore the interpretation of cartoon contents and violence by middle grade children in elementary schools. This study was conducted by interviewing ten children in an elementary school in Ping-Tung County. Utilizing semi-structured interviews, focused interviews and documentary research, to gather the information of children's ways of interpretation, and to analyze the influence of different sexes, interests and needs, influences and pressure among the peers, family social-economic status and educational achievement on children's interpreting ways. The conclusions are as the following. . Children's behavior of TV viewing 1. There are considerable divergences on the time on different children's TV viewing. In holidays they spend more time in watching TV than usually, and in which watching cartoons monopolizes a preponderant proportion. 2. It is not quite certain that whom is the best one to watch TV with, but the peers and sibling are usually the best choices of discussing cartoon contents. 3. The attitudes of parents on children's TV viewing decide children's average times and types of TV viewing. Some parents allow their children watch TV freely, however, some parents limit the amount of time, types and contents. 4. The processes of "peeking" cartoons are stimulating to children, and they enjoy the excitement.

    Children's interpretations of cartoon contents Protagonists and plots are the main reasons influencing children's interests. By watching cartoons, children can learn much information and principles, they also can understand what are not allowed to do. In brief, cartoons have the effects of hidden curriculum.

    Children understand that cartoon violence is bad behavior, however, they are attracted. Most children are able to memorize, attribute, and integrate cartoon contents, and understand the meanings of the theme. What children judge the rationality of cartoons has to do with 'if according with reality'. Less of children can totally and actively interpret cartoon contents. Contrarily, most of them belong to the ones who accept passively, and those who accept passively but have their own interpretation at the same time. However, the interpretation of children will change with different cartoon contexts.
