THE DEVELOPMENT AND TEN MAIN PROCEEDINGS OF MARXIST PHILOSOPHY

The collision and amalgamation of Chinese traditional philosophy, Western modern philosophy
and Marxist philosophy is the key characteristic of the philosophical forum of China in the
twentieth century.
The comprehensive innovation in "the localization of Marxist philosophy in China" and "the
modernization of Chinese philosophy" is the mainstream of the development of modern Chinese
philosophy, whereas the liberalistic theory of overall westernization and the conservative theory of
regressing to the tradition are two idealistic anabranches.
The localization of Marxist philosophy in China has come through a tortuous historical process,
and it has developed in two ways: first, as the direct theory of the Chinese Communist Party and
the state. Marxist philosophy has developed in China and resulted in three historical
proceedings—Mao Zedong's thought, Deng Xiaoping's theory and "three-representatives"
thought—and their philosophical foundations. In the second way, Marxist philosophy is an
important subject of academic researches, and its establishment and development in Peking
University is a mirror that embodies the process of its localization.
In the "May 4th" New Culture Movement, Peking University was the cradle for spreading
Marxist philosophy in China. Since the foundation of the People's Republic of China, Peking
University has become the important teaching and research foundation in Marxist philosophy. In
the new age of reform and opening-up and at the turn of the 21st century, the Marxist philosophy
of Peking University was awarded the national key discipline in 1988 and 2001. Furthermore,
Peking University is becoming the important center for research, communication, literature, and
