Manuary Grows on Seniors
Manhood. The word itself resounds with virility, evoking images of sweaty chest bumps, arm wrestling matches, epic battles involving approximately 300 Spartans, heated discussions involving car and sports teams, and of course; beards. Alright, so you got the results back on that genetic lottery, and you think you're the big winner. What is being a man all about What endowments or drawbacks are we looking at here Well pat yourself on the back – there's some really great stuff involved with being a man, namely the ability to navigate spatially, fertilize eggs, play real sports (joking), not be expected to know the names of more than five colors, being able to think logically (joking again), being able to get ready in under an hour (this one's true), and the invaluable knack for growing glorious, majestic, manly, facial hair. Celebrations of manhood or 'coming of age' rituals seem to be a universal phenomenon. Some are as masochistic as enduring bites from hundr eds of "bullet ants", while others are as wild as a night in Vegas or running barefoot across the backs of herds of cattle. It seems, however, that masculine identity itself is becoming less and less defined in modern society. With the eve of a woman-dominated workforce rapidly approaching, "being a man" is becoming much more difficult. Exactly how does one tactfully throw out a "that's what she said joke" among female co-workers Alas, perhaps the subtleties of "being a man" lie in the same grave as chivalry. (Perhaps they were both felled by the same hand!) But there is hope yet. As anyone who has wandered the halls of St. Augustine Prep throughout the month of January can attest; the spirit of manliness is indeed still alive. The hearty month was filled with Flannel Fridays, flapjack breakfasts in the mornings, and beards abounding. Thanks to the hard work of Ben Vessels, other committed seniors, and faculty; we reclaimed manhood. It took a lot of effort (and a few raffle sales…) but the deed was done.
