Twocenturiesnowseparateusfromtheseriesofconflictsknownasthe FrenchRevolutionaryWars,Thesewars,foughtbyarmiesofunprecedented size,inthecQurseofasingledecade(1792-1802)thrustuponanunwillingcontinentpolitical,socialandmilitarychangesofsuchradicalproportionsthatthey foreverchangedtheWesternworld.ForthefirsttimeinEuropeanhistorywar unleashedideologicalforceswhosepowerandappealcalledintoquestionthe principlewhichunderpinnedtheEuropeanpoliticalsystem:theprincipleof monarchy.TheFrenchRevolutionaries,inchallengingthepoliticallegitimacyof theancienr6gime,laidthefoundationsforthewidespreadacceptanceofdemocratic,representativeandconstitutionalrule.Wherevertheirarmieswentthey broughtwiththemtheabstractnotionsof`Nation'and`People',Herebegana newphaseinthehistoryofwarfarewhoseimpactisstillseentodayintheexistenceofmasscitizenarmies.Theprecedentwasset,throughuniversalconscriptionandthesystematicmarshalHngofnationalresources,for`totarwar. ThegreatestnavalandmilitaryfiguresofmoderntimesNelsonand Napoleon-cametotheforeduringthisperiod.TheyweretoreachtheirrespectiveheightsonlyashorttimelaterintheNapoleonicWars(1803-15).The RevolutionaryWarswerealsothefirstprovinggroundforthebandofcharismaticandcolourfulmenwhoweretoserveasmarshalsundertheFrench Empire.MostofNapoleon.'sgreatmarshalsandNelson'sablelieutenantsgained theirexperienceatthistime.
