THE BLUES: EPISODE 12 When Love Comes to Town
KEB' MO': Welcome to The Blues, the history of America's greatest roots music from PRI, Public Radio International. Major financial support for The Blues is proudly provided by Volkswagen. Since the beginning, the Blues and the open road have gone together. Volkswagen and music do the same. Join Volkswagen in celebrating 100 years of the Blues. Hi, I'm Keb' Mo'. For the next hour we'll hear about the 1990s, a time of renewed interest in the Blues, from fans and musicians alike. There were new Blues clubs, Blues festivals, and Blues recordings of all kinds. This is The Blues: "When Love Comes to Town." GAYE ADEGBALOLA: Sometimes the pain is just so bad that you need something to hold your hand at that moment and the Blues can be that for a lot of people. ERIC CLAPTON: In all of the trials and tribulations of my life, I've always had this incredibly secure place to go to… the Blues. B.B. KING: As long as there are people, we're gonna find somebody that feel that they're left out when it comes to love. They love somebody more than the other person loves them. That makes the Blues. SONG: U2 with B.B. King, "When Love Comes to Town" KEB' MO': B.B. King and U2 off U2's "Rattle and Hum" album from 1988. The mixture of vocals from B.B. and Bono, and guitar sounds from B.B. and The Edge was a marriage of old and new. As the new decade dawned, it looked like the '90s would be a great time for the Blues. August 26, 1990, Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. Stevie Ray Vaughan ended his concert with an historic encore that featured his brother Jimmy Vaughan, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton. Afterwards, Stevie Ray jumped on a helicopter headed to Chicago. The helicopter never made it. BUDDY GUY: You know, life is strange. KEB' MO': Buddy Guy, remembers. BUDDY GUY: We just had so much fun that night. He was just so intense that night. And he came out and played one of the songs I wrote, "You Better Leave My Little Girl Alone." And every time he was singing he would point his finger straight up. And that's some of the things that I never will forget. KEB' MO': Guitarist Sonny Rhodes.
