    Writing Course s 英文写作 ( direct tuition by Stanford University EPGY) All English writing courses (except E01 and W11C) have weekly meetings in the virtual classroom where students and instructors discuss aspects of the course. The courses have long and short essay assignments which students complete off-line and submit electronically to instructors for evaluation. Most English courses are offered just once a quarter. You can, however, begin the E01A-C courses at the start of any month. All students must pass with a B- or better in every class to continue in the EPGY English Program. Students applying to take Expository Writing courses must submit writing samples for assessment at least 45 days before the quarter starts (Usual start months: Spring Quarter - April; Summer Quarter - June; Fall Quarter September; Winter Quarter – January). (Introductory le ve l) W09A Introductory Expository Writing W09B Introductory Non-fiction Description and Narration W09C Introductory Literary Analysis This course sequence is intended for students who are reading at the sixth-grade level or beyond, who have a good grasp of the essential elements or English grammar and mechanics. The sequence provides opportunities to develop paragraph- and essay-writing skills. Topics include: paragraph coherence and development; thesis statements and essay organization; narration and description; introduction to literary analysis. Students read and discuss texts chosen from a variety of fiction sources. (Reading material can vary depending on instructor.) Virtual classroom is mandatory. All students must pass W09A with a B- or better as the prerequisite to W09B or W09C. W09B and W09C do not have to be taken sequentially. Completion time: 1 quarter per course. (Inte rme diate le ve l) W10A Intermediate Expository Writing and T extual Analysis W10B Intermediate Literary Analysis: The Importance of Being Earnest W10C Intermediate Argumentation These courses introduce students to essay composition in the context of critical reading. These courses are intended for students studying in middle school, and for students who have completed W09ABC. T opics include: literary analysis; argumentative essay composition; critical reading of a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts, including poems, short stories, narrative essays, a full-length dramatic work, historical nonfiction, and editorials. (Reading material can vary depending on instructor.) Virtual classroom is mandatory. All students must pass W10A with a B- or better as the prerequisite to W10B or W10C. W10B and W10C do not have to be taken sequentially. Completion time: 1 quarter per course.
