Part I. British Literature from the Old English Period to the Eighteenth Century （50%）

Please choose TWO out of the three questions and write cogent and well-organized essays in response.

I. The sea is an important image in a number of lyric or reflective poems. Discuss the use of the sea as

an image or a symbol in Milton’s “Lycidas” and its relation to the structure or theme of the poem as a

whole.

II. Among Shakespeare’s characters who represent the figure of others, Othello and Shylock are two

most colorful personae, please discuss representations of racial difference through one of these two

figures in the plays.

III. Discuss the use and function of satire in Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels or Pope’s The Rape of the Lock.

Part II. British Literature from the Romantic Period to the Twentieth Century（50%）

I. Please write a cogent and well-organized essay in response to one of the following questions. (20%)

1. What is the role of landscape in Romantic poetry? Explain your points of view from two relevant

poems.

2. The impact of war on literature is considerable; please use a literary work to illustrate how war has

influenced the writings.

II. Write a short paragraph (60~80 words) each on three of the following items. (15%)
