Course Purpose:
Unlike the regular approaches to strategic management, this course provides an alternative method to perceive and analyze business strategies. The course introduces and uses strategic frameworks built on the traditional Chinese philosophical concepts to delineate the causal mechanisms---how does a strategy work---underlying a business strategy. At any point in time, always viewing simultaneously the inside as well as the outside of a firm, the frameworks map a firm's internal components and external factors together in a model when observing, describing, and analyzing how they dynamically drive a strategy to run. In accordance with the traditional Chinese philosophy, this comprehensive treatment of strategic management captures the causality of a strategy, hence marking a potentially critical approach toward the solutions of modern strategic management problems in both theory and practice. As such, in this course, the regular strategy subjects, such as resource-based view, SWOT, competitive strategies, sustained competitive advantage, and balanced scorecards, will be discussed using the frameworks. It is the purpose of the course that the more than 5000 years old Chinese philosophical conceptions can be shown to contribute to the 21 century strategic problem solving, at least providing an unheard-of yet enlightening method for MBA students in face of the endlessly complex real world business strategy problems.
