The system of arranged marriage in India was well established during the period of 4000---1000B.C. and has been closely obeyed by the vast majority of the population since that period .
The practice of arranged marriage cuts across all regional boundaries and language barriers in India . In the common joint family arrangement where several generations are living together , the future bride is evaluated on her suitability as part of the entire family environment rather than only as a wife to her husband . Love is not viewed as an important element in mate selection nor is courtship (求爱时期) thought to be necessary for testing the relationship . It is thought to be a destructive element . Personal qualities such as appearance and personality are not considered very important . In women , moral character , beauty , ability to cook well and manage a home and education are emphasized .
