Charlie Chaplin, the world-famous actor, was born in London in 1889. Both his parents had been on the stage and had hoped that they would one day become "stare". Unluckily his father died when he was still a child, His mother's life was so terrible that she finally went mad.
Chaplin left England for America in 1913, His future was not certain, but he was sure it could be better than his past. Not long after he came to America he was working first as an actor and the as a film-maker. From 1914 to 1917 he appeared in sixty-two short silent films. In 1918 he began to make his own films in Hollywood.
In 1948 Chaplin decided to make his home in Switzerland for some reason. In 1972 he received his first Oscar award. Then, in 1975, The 86-year-old Chaplin retuned to London. He died in 1977. People remember him as one of the greatest and funniest actors in the history of the cinema.
